To help our customers to really know their employee drivers, Pennsylvania Lumbermens Mutual Insurance Company has partnered with an industry leader in driver risk management, Samba Safety, to offer continuous MVR monitoring. But is that enough? A lot can happen in a year’s time! It has largely been considered a “best practice” to pull MVRs initially, post-accident and on annual intervals. Shouldn’t company managers want to know as much information as possible about employee drivers? Many companies (though some sources, like an Automotive Fleet magazine survey, say fewer than 50 percent) will request motor vehicle reports (MVRs) at some interval. One statistic that really stands out is that 94 percent of vehicle collisions (“accidents”) are caused by driver error according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The statistics are startling: there were 42,000 motor vehicle collision deaths in 2016, according to the National Safety Council, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that vehicle collisions have been the leading cause of deaths at the workplace for many years. Driving is one of the most hazardous tasks performed in the workplace. Vehicles are used extensively in wood business operations, and drivers (typically employees, but can include contractors) are obviously needed to operate those vehicles. Next up, SAMBA, which I found is, a Driver Monitoring Solution service that both Uber and Lyft use to gather these Driver Abstracts, and spits out a risk assessment based on the information they are given.Īs I stated in the open, Uber and Lyft, when rejecting a driver for a "disqualifying event", give a link to, which is the customer-facing website for this company, to request a copy of the report.Pennsylvania Lumbermens Mutual Announces a New Partnership with Samba Safety So NY LENS just reports the abstract info. I was told by the rep that all NY LENS does is update the status of New York Drivers' 3-Year Abstract, sending the updates in real-time to companies that use the information, such as Uber and Lyft. It's apparently for companies that use NY LENS. This is the contact group for LENS (License Event Notification Service) support that the NY DMV website shows. I got ahold of a person at New York DMV Data Services. Having to go to the Bronx from Upstate is a PITA (I'm around the I-81 corridor), but if its what's needed to be done, I'll let y'all know. I saw one post say someone went to a Greenlight Hub and got things straightened out and were re-activated. I will follow up how things turn out for me. If any of my fellow New York State Uber Drivers (and those that do Lyft as well, apparently) need to find out what's being reported to take us off the driving app, that's the place to go.įill out the form, make sure you get the confirmation e-mail that they got the filled out form, and wait for the report. I was e-mailed the following link, with leads to a company called Safety Holdings Inc., or SAMBA in internal Uber parlance: I asked where can I get ahold of this report so I can see what they're seeing and I'm not with my driving record history. Was told that after New York generated this report, it goes to the *California* DMV (Where Uber's based out of) to get the thumbs up or down on whether to allow the driver to stay on. I called into customer service, and got someone who actually explained the process to me. It looks like quite a few New York State Drivers have gotten de-activated due to this "showing a disqualifying event" even though our driving records have less than the 3 infractions Uber and Checkr look for, and CLEAR. I called to ask what the holdup is, and was informed of the NY LENS Program: I passed CLEAR through the Checkr background checks, but still wasn't being activated. I just recently applied for re-activation after having my Year 2019 junk fall off my driving record and clearing me up. I did a search and see this has come up before in spurts, but felt a new catch-all of sorts is needed for this diabolical program that is taking New York State drivers offline. Uber Support, Uber Support'd and had 4 different people give me 4 different answers to my situation until the last one said I'm clear and assisted in getting my account back online. This process is DIFFERENT from when I originally signed up in late-2018.Īt the time, all I had for Upstate NY was the Checkr report. Ī rep at NY DMV who I talked to stated to me that LENS gives these companies the 3-year abstract of Traffic Violations and Accidents, and sends out updates accordingly as listed at the linked website. SAMBA get their information for Upstate New York Drivers through the LENS (License Event Notification Service) program. UPDATED EDIT: So for Upstate New York Drivers, I found that Uber uses Checkr for background, but then uses, a third-party Driver Monitoring Service, for the driving record.
